A female GeoScience Lecturer in the Faculty of Mining Engineering at the Midlands State University, Rutendo Tafirenyika, was on Tuesday involved in a street fight at Mandava shopping centre in Zvishavane over a Harare based boyfriend only identified as Fanuel.
The Lecturer is also the Vice President of Midlands State University Lecturers Association (MSULA).
According to the source who requested anonymity the lecturer and the woman who she engaged with were friends before the lecturer snatched her boyfriend.
The woman who could be seen on the receiving end on the video that went viral was only indentified as Prisca who runs a saloon and is a well known hairdresser specialising in manicure and pedicure.
It is alleged the hairdresser and her boyfriend broke up and her friend Tafirenyika who recently divorced her husband fell for the boyfriend.
This did not go down well with the hairdresser who confronted her friend over the affair. A heated exchange ensued on whatsapp until the two met on Tuesday leading to a serious fight which left the hairdresser nursing some injuries.
Members of the public could be seen on the video trying to intervene and stop the fight.
Social media is awash with the videos and pictures of the street fight, with some members of the public condemning the kind of public indescency displayed by the lecturer, which they say should not be permitted in her profession, given her standing in the community.
Tafirenyika who could be seen in videos bashing the hapless Prisca while shouting obscenities refused to comment on the issue after being contacted by this publication.
“I have no comment on the issue”, said Tafirenyika.
Information and Public Relations Director of Midlands State University, Mirirai Mawere confirmed the incident but could not shed more light on the issue as she referred the matter as internal affairs that is being investigated by the institute.
“I cannot give you any details as these are internal matters that are being investigated by the university.” Mawere said.
Unfortunately, this publication could not get any further details on the matter as the Midlands State University Registrar, Tinashe Zishiri said they do not discuss such issues with the media, but also confirmed that the matter is being investigated by the institute.
“We do not share such internal issues with the media but it is being investigated by the university” Zishiri added.
