True to his words during a Constituency Indaba held at Chitsanga last month that he is going to deal with Councillors at Chiredzi Town Council, MP for Chiredzi West, Farai Musikavanhu, once again wrote a letter to the local authourity, demanding that he be availed with a copy of the Nhamo Commission report.
Citizen Coalition for Change Councilors yesterday fumed over his demands during a full Council meeting at the town house, saying the MP is jumping the gun, and wrongfully popping his nose into council, which is none of his business.
Though all councilors were in agreement that Musikavanhu was over stepping his powers, Zanu pf Councilors, who always deliberate under an eagle’s eye from the President’s Office, came to his defence, challenging Cllr Roger Chikonye, who decided to hit the nail on the head.
Cllr Chikonye said Council has been giving audience to the MP, who now takes it as his right.
“The MP must be reminded that we don’t report to him but to the Local Government Minister.
Locally, we are accountable to the DDC, not him.
The problem is that we have been quiet on this matter hoping that he might come to his senses. Infact, we are giving him too much relevance by giving him audience.
If he wants anything from Council, he must get that just like any other ordinary resident.
If he wants classified information from council, he must follow due processes and procedures not to toss us around like that”, Chikonye fumed.
Zanu pf Councilors, Obert Ngwenya, Blessing Mazinyani, Josphat Nzombe and Liberty Macharaga almost jumped out of their seats, as they bellow for Chikonye to withdraw his statement, but without success.
Vice-Chairman, Cllr Ropafadzo Makumire (chairing), threatened to throw out Ngwenya for interjecting the procedings, but the Ward 2 Councilor was bullish.
“Councilor Ngwenya can you come to order and speak through the Chair, or I will throw you out”, Makumire ordered.
“Handibudi”, Ngwenya retorted.
Acting Town Secretary, Wesley Kauma presented to the Councilors, one of the numerous letters that was written by the MP demanding a copy of the Nhamo Commission report.
Kauma said on several such correspondences, he replied to the MP and also advising him to approach the Local Goverment Minister.
“I wouldn’t like this to look like personal. I replied this demand by the MP several times but he is still insisting”, he said.
All councillors agreed that there will be a meeting with the MP where they will tell him not to overstep his oversight duties.
